This online course is the first of a three-part series:

A Description of what the session(s)

This three-part series explores drama therapy’s capacity to foster transformation across personal, relational, and collective dimensions through performance. Participants will be introduced to three distinct yet interrelated forms of therapeutic performance specific to drama therapy: Self-Revelatory Performance, Co-Revelatory Performance, and Theatre for Change (a project developed at CIIS). Each offers a unique pathway to healing, insight, and change.

Sessions will include didactic presentations, sample performance footage with analysis, experiential activities adapted for virtual participation, and opportunities for reflective dialogue and inquiry.

Any specific learning outcomes or objectives:

Articulate the theoretical foundations, core elements, and intended therapeutic functions of Self-Revelatory Performance, Co-Revelatory Performance, and Theatre for Change within drama therapy praxis.

Differentiate the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and sociocultural dimensions of therapeutic performance and their respective applications in clinical, educational, and community contexts.

Analyse recorded examples of therapeutic performance to assess therapeutic objectives, aesthetic strategies, and indicators of psychodramatic or transformative impact on the performer(s).

Facilitator(s)

Aileen B. Cho

Aileen B. Cho, MA, LMFT, RDT/BCT, CEDS, is a second-generation, bilingual Korean American psychotherapist. She is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in the State of California, a Registered Drama Therapist and Board Certified Trainer through the North American Drama Therapy Association (NADTA), and a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist through the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP). Aileen earned her M.A. in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Drama Therapy from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), and her B.A. in Theatre (with a Area of Focus in Psychology) from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). She is currently Core Faculty and an Associate Professor in the Drama Therapy Program at CIIS. Her past clinical experience includes training and working in a domestic violence and sexual assault center/shelter, community mental health, the Veterans Affairs (VA), and middle and high school settings. She has extensive experience working with adolescents and adults, couples, groups, and families in inpatient psychiatric hospitals, residential treatment centers, partial hospitalization programs (PHP), intensive outpatient programs (IOP), and private practice—treating trauma, eating disorders, and co-occurring psychiatric conditions throughout the Bay Area and Southern California. She provides in-service trainings and consultations for a range of programs and organizations. At CIIS, Aileen teaches courses including Case Seminar, Developmental Transformations I & II, Trauma & Resilience: Embodied Approaches to Treatment, and Final Integrative Seminar: Self-Revelatory
