Working therapeutically with memory, narrative, and the mythic imagination
In this day workshop in central London, we will look at :
The key role of memory in clinical practice
How memory can heal into imagination and creative practice through storytelling
How metaphors offer ways into the mythic imagination
How the mythic imagination can help identify, work through and reframe toxic internalised narratives.
Consider the secret nature of stories, and how working with stories offers medicine to therapist as well as client.
Stories surround us, telling and listening to them, so ubiquitous to our human nature and our daily life that we may not always appreciate their value. Yet stories have a secret nature too; they shape our lives. At best, the unfolding story of our lives is a source of courage and creativity. At worst, deeply held stories about ourselves and others perpetuate our suffering and keep us locked in anxiety, depression, and traumatic memory.
Dramatherapists work with stories in a way that creates a bridge between interpersonal narrative and life story work through to the deep origins of story in myth, dream, and ritual. It integrates non-intrusive ways of responding to our client’s life story with direct ways to disrupt and help reframe traumatic memories.
